Energy and Technology By: Jack Schiffhauer

Technology has changed in big ways throughout the years. Everyday technology gets better and better and helps everyday life today in big ways from holding software, being able to do math, watch videos, keeping data, etc.. Americans alone spend at least 8 billion hours every month on digital screens. But with the increase in technology the influence to reduce emissions becomes overwhelming. A YouTube video that generated over 5 billion views in a month burned the same amount of energy as 40,000 U.S. homes in a year. The data centers that they are building use a lot of energy to keep them cool, these data centers need a lot of energy to power the computers also. Instead of burning fossil fuels to keep the computers on and running and cool they should use solar power because it is more efficient than fossil fuels and can hold power in the batteries it collects from the sun.

  1. I agree with your statement on using solar power rather than fossil fuels. If the human population could be more determined to make the switch from fossil fuels to solar energy our air quality would likely become much more clean.
I also found it interesting that a YouTube video that generated over 5 billion views in a month burned the same amount of energy as 40,000 U.S. homes in a year. That seems so bizarre! When I here stats like that I get so frustrated with what mankind has done and will continue to do to this planet if we don’t change.
I really liked you post I don’t usually focus on the technology side of things so it was nice to learn more.

  2. This is a great, informational post. I really like how you used statistics and sources. It really shows that you did your research and that you now have at least some background knowledge on the topic if you didn’t already. Along with that I think it’s great how you compared the burning of energy in two completely different ways. You seem like you are pretty knowledgeable on the energy and technology topic!

  3. This topic really relates well to the world that we live in today. We can all really make connection with how technology has advanced. Especially when we look at how schools all around us are functioning today. We have so many new things that can help students in the classroom. Thinking about how schools are having to do things this year it all includes technology. My brothers high school is trying really hard not to have any paper assignments to eliminate the contact with the virus. This being said he is doing everything from english to math on his laptop. Which can be really hard if you are not used to that. Also schools are offering all online schooling due to the virus to anyone in the district and some schools have just decided to go all virtual which is crazy to think about the fact that we can have class all on out laptops and or tablets. Technology has come along way. I agree that solo power should be used more often because it is more efficient than fossil fuels.
