Blog post 3: Jenna Elliott

As I said in my last post species on this planet are becoming extinct 100 times faster than what they would if humans did not have an impact. One animal that I feel like everyone has a little information about are the elephants. The African elephant population is in a crisis. Elephants' have high value ivory. Since the elephants' ivory is so valuable they are being pouched. Pouching for ivory is at its highest level since the ban on international ivory trade. During the last century the elephant population in Mara-Sergengeti has greatly fluctuated. In the early part of the 20th century there where no elephants to be found in this area.  In 1961when an aerial survey was done there where 1,157 elephants counted. By 1970 there where a total of 4,200 elephants counted.

  1. I think that there are many animals in the world that are in danger mainly just because of poaching. I know that it is very hard to get that fully under control but I just wish those people would open their eyes and realize that they are going extinct so maybe they should stop killing them. I will never understand that how people can just kill innocent animals.

  2. Elephants do get the worse end of the stick due to poaching, maybe if our governments set limits or enacted better laws and restriction we wouldn’t be losing as many animals. Pretty soon we won’t know what a giraffe is,a rhino, or even tigers. We had so many different species of tigers and we killed them off and now we’re doing it again, but more rapidly and with as many animals as possible and people should be ashamed.
