Conservation/ Extinction
The Article that I found talks about 10 tragic stories that have to lead up to extinction. The 10 animals that the article talks about are Warrah, Stephens Island Wren, Passenger Pigeon, Japanese Sea Lion, Heath Hen, Great Auk, Gravenche, Dusky Sea Side Sparrow, California Parakeet, and Atlas Bear. These animals are animals that have been extinct for a very long time. Most of these animals went expect from overhunting, animal hunting, or habitat ruining. This article goes into great detail on when and how these certain animals died. One example was from the California Parakeet "Sadly the birds were known for their altruistic habit of flocking to attend to dead or dying members of the same flock—so if only a few birds were felled by hunters, many of the rest of the flock would remain nearby, making themselves easy targets." This quote from the article really stood out to me on how the animals react to another's death. Many of these birds have sympathy for the bird that has died. Because of that, the flock stayed near which made them more of a target. In some of the situations with these animals in the article, the cities made laws to help prevent their extinction. Sadly by the time the laws where set it was too late for them to truly save the animals population.

Cool. Lots of these have incredible stories. So hard to believe we wiped out the passenger pigeon

This is awesome information. It is just so crazy that we have unfortunately wiped out so many cool animals. I'm sure they would have been so cool to see in person, as I have never even heard of some of these animals.
ReplyDeleteThe extinction of the California parakeet was an interesting story. Sadly I feel like many extinct animals are due to the hunting from humans.
