Land Use (zoning) - Chase Rankin

Land Use / Zoning / Engineering - Borough of Chester

In this blog, I am going to be talking about zoning. Some things that I will cover are what it is, how it is used, who uses it and some rules of zoning. For as far back as we can think, zoning has been the go-to way to organize land and how it will be used as seen in the picture above. The first zoning ordinance was adopted by New York in 1916,  and since then, it has been adopted by every highly populated area across America. Most of the time the way zoning has to do with land use is by organizing the land before doing anything to mold it into what you want it to look like, whether that be by farming, building or even just clearing land out for something.

Some ways that people tend to divide or zone areas into is into residential, commercial and industrial districts, that way it can begin organized. Some of the additional regulations that typically are installed in zoning these districts are specific requirements as to the type of buildings allowed, location of utility lines, restrictions on accessory buildings, building setbacks from the streets and other boundaries, size and height of buildings and number of rooms. These regulations have been provided to me by Land Use and Zoning Basics (FindLaw). All that people are trying to do with these regulations is provide order and organization in the zones to make everything easier and look cleaner.

  1. I have began to notice this in the past couple of years. When driving I would see signs that would say stop zoning. I think that it is a good thing that they plan out where and what they are building. What I don’t like is that they don’t have a problem with taking the animals land away. I think that the government should restrict the to how much they can build per year.

  2. A lot of things have to do with zoning. Not only does zoning influence how we treat the environment, but it also effects what kind of resources go where for that zone. Also some of the zones have different infrastructures and the all have different communities.
