Natural Resources: Over-consumption Blog #4

Environmental resources are any materials from the environment that is valuable to society. For example, water, sources of energy, and food are all resources the people and animals get to have the luxury of using because the environment provides it for us. Water is needed to help grow food and generate energy. Energy is needed to supply water and produce food. Food can be used to produce energy and transport water. The environment also provides us with plants, which help to reduce pollution in the air.

So when we consume these resources at an exceedingly fast rate it is known as Over-consumption. In the Friends of the Earth Article it states, "The over consumption of energy, water and raw materials worsens climate change and increases air pollution. It exhausts the planet's life support systems like the ones that provide us with fresh water, and leaves us short of materials critical to our health and quality of life."

  1. Over consumption is a major problem in our society. I worked as a hostess over the summer and saw so much food wasted. We as a society are incredibly wasteful. It completely blows my mind. If everyone could be more knowledgeable about their impact it would make the world a better place.

  2. I didn’t realize that food consumption can increase air pollution. I work at TopGolf and 35% of our food goes to waste in an hour and we’re open for 10+ hours a day and that’s a lot of air pollution we are putting into the air.
