Fossil Fuels and Greed by Lelya Powell

 Fossil Fuels and Greed

For some odd reason, the topic of renewable energy is controversial in the United States. Many bills and laws are trying to be passed in some states and in general in the U.S., but don't end up getting passed, why is that? From what I have read about renewable energy is that it is good and it makes the environment better and it has more pros than cons, unlike fossil fuels that are literally destroying the atmosphere and the air we breathe. There are also many studies that show it now costs less to change to using renewable resources than it is to keep using the nonrenewable ones, so why would people not want to make the switch because it is all about money and not the bettering of the environment of the people. The thing is that oil companies know exactly what is going on with the environment and exactly what they are doing to make it worse, they don't care as long as the money is coming to them and as long as the law is not coming for them. The CEO of Chevron in 2018 paid himself 20.6 million and in 2019 rose it almost 60% and gave himself 33.1 million. In the company in 2019, there were about 48,000 employees that range from making 8.66$ an hour, a product manager making about 55.00$, to making about 170,000 a year in the highest senior position. Chevron is also starting to let some people go as the oil business is starting to "struggle". These big companies don't think renewable resources are profitable, but in my opinion not only will it create more jobs, make the environment better, but they can also use the money that they made from fossil fuels and transfer it into the renewable resource sector and will probably be making the same amount they always have, but for me, it's not about the money you make when you die those things don't go with you I'm guessing. It's about people, people who work, people who need clean energy, people who need jobs, people who need resources, everything should not just be about money and how we pay ourselves, but how we use that money to help others and help our environment.

  1. Yes, there are so many odd parts to the economics of this, like all the subsidies we keep giving the oil companies...
